“Other People” an indie movie from 2016 starring Jesse Plemons (as David), and Molly Shannon (as Joanne). A “tremendous” movie as is readable on the DVD cover – and on the banner behind Maude in these pictures! Furthermore “bold and hilarious”, which is a proper good term for this story in which Joanne is the mother of David and his two younger sisters Rebeccah (Madisen Beaty), and Alexandra (Maude Apatow). Joanne was diagnosed with a rare and deadly cancer which came to the fore in the year’s end festive season when the whole family was at home in Sacramento, California. David is a writer and a gay man who live in NYC, therefore he as the oldest sibling is shocked by this terrible news. The movie tells the story of Joanne’s dying, and that her tragic fate brings the otherwise divided family together. The kids, the grandparents, and the close friends all react in very different ways and this creates some natural tensions which drive many really hilarious situations and conversations. Fortunately Joanne ‘s soul is very strong and embracing, she doesn’t behave melodramatic over her fate with which she rather helps her own family to process the drama. So, this is an entertaining, in some points funny, and utterly touching film with great acting by Molly Shannon and Jesse Plemons – and also the whole cast – but I write this review due to Miss Apatow, therefore I need to say that she is stunning in her minor role! When this movie was filmed she was 18-year-old, yet she is as Alexandra be emotionally closest to David, who is the most complex character in the story. Miss Apatow plays her character with grown-up seriousness, girlish charm. She’s calm but not passionless. She is pragmatic but deeply feeling. She is a sweet but strong girl, not accidental that the writer, director Chris Kelly imagined and made the final scene of the film as Alexandra smiles peacefully at each other with her brother in the room where the other members of the family sleeps after Joanne’s gone. I respect hugely Maude doesn’t want to play only the protagonists! She wasn’t well known as actor at that time, but even now, when she’s got worldwide success as Lexi Howard in the series “Euphoria”, her next film “One of Them Days” – premiering at January 24, 2025 in the USA – she plays another minor character in an African-American comedy in which she is the only one white character according to the trailer of the movie! I can’t wait to see it…
