Janelle Monáe once again proved her status as a fashion icon at the 2024 Met Gala, donning a custom Vera Wang Couture dress that seamlessly merged the event’s theme of “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” with sustainability. The singer-actress’ ensemble incorporated recycled plastic bottles molded into organically shaped flowers, a creative touch that highlighted her commitment to eco-conscious style.
Monáe’s avant-garde look was further elevated by intricate details, including plastic paillettes dripping from her hair.
While the daring design may not appeal to all, it undoubtedly showcased Monáe and Vera Wang’s ability to push the boundaries of high fashion.
The holographic gown Monáe wore also embodied the event’s “Garden of Time” dress code, with curvaceous discs clinging to her figure and trailing into a mini-train. Despite the seemingly transparent fabric, the ensemble featured waist cutouts and a plunging sweetheart neckline, adding a touch of sensuality. Monáe completed the look with towering clear platforms and Reza jewelry, while her side-swept hairstyle, styled in collaboration with Olaplex, provided the finishing touch.
Monáe’s Met Gala appearances have become legendary, with her 2023 mid-carpet outfit change and her 2019 Salvador Dali and Pablo Picasso-inspired dress further cementing her status as a fashion risk-taker. As she reflected on her Met Gala journey, which began in 2011, Monáe offered advice to her past self: “Stay present. Don’t overthink.”
