Gwen Stefani Unleashes Punk Whiplash in 1996 ‘Spiderwebs’ Shoot

Gwen Stefani Unleashes Punk Whiplash in 1996 ‘Spiderwebs’ Shoot

In Joseph Cultice’s 1996 shoot for “Spiderwebs,” Gwen Stefani fused ska-punk chaos with Adidas cool—midriff bared, attitude dialed to eleven, and not a corset in sight.

Before Y2K minimalism took hold, before pop stars were polished into oblivion, there was Gwen Stefani—raw, radiant, and radically herself. In her 1996 photoshoot for No Doubt’s “Spiderwebs,” captured by Joseph Cultice, Stefani didn’t just pose—she detonated.

The look? A cropped, color-blocked top in electric yellow and cobalt blue, slashed high to reveal her famously taut midriff. Paired with Adidas track pants, the ensemble was a deliberate clash: sporty, punk, and unmistakably 90s. The pants—black with white stripes—hung low on her hips, a nod to the era’s love affair with boyish silhouettes and gender-fluid styling.
And then there were the shoes. Chunky red-and-black platforms, teetering between rave and riot, grounded the look with a kind of cartoonish defiance. It was fashion as rebellion, but also fashion as fun—something Stefani mastered long before irony became currency.
The shoot’s atmosphere was stark: a white backdrop, no props, no distractions. Just Gwen and her bandmates, styled like a ska-punk street gang with a flair for theatricality. The lighting was bright, almost clinical, which only made Stefani’s platinum hair and matte red lip pop harder. Her makeup was minimal but sharp—liner flicked just enough to suggest danger, not drama.
Culturally, this shoot sits at the intersection of punk’s mainstream breakthrough and the rise of fashion-forward music videos. “Spiderwebs,” released as the second single from Tragic Kingdom in 1996, was a sonic middle finger to unwanted attention—and the visuals matched. Stefani’s look echoed the song’s message: don’t call me, don’t follow me, and definitely don’t expect me to dress for you.
It’s worth noting that while the Vivienne Westwood corset from the “Spiderwebs” music video has become iconic, this Cultice shoot offered a different flavor—less polished, more punk. No roses, no romanticism. Just raw energy and a refusal to conform.
Styled with her signature platinum waves and a gaze that could cut glass, Stefani embodied the 90s fashion ethos: mix it, clash it, own it. And nearly three decades later, the look still hits like a bass drop.
