Monica Barbaro posed for a The Guardian photoshoot in April 2026 in a pale blue button-down shirt and gold floral earrings — and the jewelry does more than it first appears.
That earring. One gold floral drop — small, slightly sculptural, sitting just below a matching stud at the ear — and it’s doing more compositional work in this editorial photoshoot than most accessories manage across an entire spread.
Monica Barbaro shot for The Guardian in April 2026 in what’s essentially a single, well-chosen shirt: a pale powder-blue button-down with a white contrast collar and placket piping — the kind of detail that separates a considered shirt from a generic one. The collar sits open two or three buttons, relaxed without looking sloppy, and the slightly oversized cut through the shoulders gives the whole thing a lived-in quality that I’d argue is harder to achieve than it looks. Fitted would’ve been wrong here. This proportion is right.
But back to the earring. The gold floral drop — something between a botanical motif and a small chandelier form — adds the one warm note against the blue-and-pink palette. The shirt is cool-toned. The backdrop is hot pink. The earring sits right in the middle, bridging both. I’m not sure whether that was the stylist’s precise intention or a happy accident, but either way it lands. The matte gold finish catches just enough light without competing with the face, which is clearly the priority in a portrait this tight.
Her hair — dark brown with warm auburn ends, blown loose and caught mid-movement — creates a diagonal line across the frame that stops the composition from reading as completely static. It’s the kind of choice that might’ve been wind or might’ve been a fan on set (probably the latter), but the effect is the same: the image breathes.
The makeup sits minimal throughout. Barely-there nude lip, light skin finish, nothing that pulls focus. Correct call for a portrait where the eyes are meant to do the talking. If anything, I’d have wanted one slightly stronger brow to anchor it — but that’s a minor quibble with an otherwise tightly controlled shoot.
For a celebrity photoshoot, this one’s built around restraint, and restraint — when it’s this well-calibrated — tends to travel well. The shirt and earring combination keeps showing up across celebrity style editorial work right now, and there’s a reason: it photographs cleanly and ages out of trend cycles faster than statement pieces.
That gold earring was probably the smallest decision made on set. It might’ve been the most important one.
