Gigi Hadid returned to couture in a monumental Balenciaga feather cocoon, pairing iridescent rooster plumes with extremely wide trousers for a study in controlled volume.

Returning to a haute couture runway after four years, Gigi Hadid in Balenciaga couture walked the Balenciaga Fall/Winter 2026–2027 presentation in Paris on July 8 wearing an immense cocoon of iridescent black rooster feathers. Created in collaboration with Philip Treacy, the piece does not frame a conventional garment. It replaces the entire upper silhouette.

Dense feathers radiate around Hadid’s head, shoulders and torso until only her face remains visible through a central opening. That circular framing gives the volume a clear destination. Without it, the piece could have become an undirected mass; instead, every layer appears to move outward from the face.

The feathers are not uniform. Their curved tips overlap in different directions, while green and blue reflections emerge across the black surface under direct sunlight. That tonal change prevents the cocoon from reading as a single flat shape, even at its enormous scale.

The design comes close to costume, but two choices keep it within a disciplined couture argument. First, there is no competing jewelry, visible neckline or decorative makeup story. Second, the trousers beneath the cocoon abandon surface detail and continue the silhouette through pure width.

Those extremely wide, deeply pleated trousers fall in a dark forest-green or charcoal tone and pool over the hidden footwear. Their long vertical drape counters the circular explosion above. The upper half expands outward; the lower half drops straight toward the runway. That opposition gives the look structure despite its deliberately distorted proportions.

Movement is essential. As Hadid walks, the trouser legs separate and fold while the feathered cocoon retains its rounded mass. One section responds fluidly to each step; the other appears almost architectural. Couture volume becomes more convincing when different parts move at different speeds, and this look demonstrates that principle clearly.

The stark white outdoor runway sharpens the dark ensemble further. Against that bright surface, individual feather edges remain visible, while the trousers cast a broad shadow that reinforces their scale. The audience effectively becomes the size reference: seated figures make the cocoon appear even more monumental.

This Paris Fashion Week runway moment also carried real context. Hadid’s return coincided with Pierpaolo Piccioli’s debut couture collection for Balenciaga, making an intentionally unforgettable silhouette appropriate rather than gratuitous.

A 9.5/10 reflects how completely the concept is resolved. The feathers engulf the body, the face provides focus, and the trousers turn spectacle into a coherent full-length silhouette.
